

A historic courthouse in Rome, Georgia, is on fire and fully engulfed in flames.
Emergency crews responded to the fire at Floyd County Courthouse on Monday afternoon.
It is unclear what sparked the blaze.
Video posted to X shows the courthouse totally engulfed in flames.

A massive fire has broken out at the Historic Floyd County Courthouse in downtown Rome on Monday, March 23, 2026. Emergency crews are currently on the scene battling heavy flames and thick black smoke that can be seen billowing across the city’s skyline.
The fire was reported early this afternoon, prompting the Rome Police Department to issue an urgent traffic advisory, asking residents to avoid 5th Avenue at Tribune and the Government Plaza area while fire operations are underway.

The Floyd County Historic Courthouse was evacuated after a fire was discovered in the building around 2:20 p.m. on Monday.
All employees inside were safely evacuated, according to Floyd County Manager Jamie McCord. Crews with the Rome-Floyd County Fire Department are currently on scene working to contain the blaze. Roads in the downtown area are blocked and police are evacuating portions of Broad Street.
The courthouse was undergoing renovations at the time of the fire. At this time, the cause remains unknown and is under investigation.
