In an interview on MSNBC’s “PoliticsNation” with Rev. Al Sharpton this weekend, Democrat Congressman André Carson of Indiana said he opposes the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act because women are “too busy” to get IDs and prove citizenship before voting.
Carson was on the show launching his re-election bid for Indiana’s 7th Congressional District.
“Trump and his congressional Republicans are absolutely trying to dismantle our electoral process,” the Democrat claimed.
Carson continued, “And the SAVE Act, it impacts millions of women who changed their last names after marriage, many of them were mothers, mothers who are incredibly busy. They don’t have time to track down extra paperwork. It will also prevent minorities from voting, and their strategy couldn’t be more clear, and the American people are pushing back. I hope the Senate does the same.”

The SAVE America Act, which passed the House in February along mostly party lines, amends the National Voter Registration Act to mandate documentary proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate, passport, or naturalization papers when registering to vote in federal elections.
The legislation is necessary to prevent non-citizens from voting and safeguard election integrity.
Opponents, including Carson and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, have labeled the bill as voter suppression, comparing it to “Jim Crow” laws and warning it could disenfranchise millions, particularly people of color, married women, and the elderly who may lack easy access to required documents.
Senate Republicans plan to force a vote on the SAVE America Act next week, anticipating its failure due to the 60-vote filibuster threshold.
President Trump has made passing the legislation a top priority.
Several lawmakers, including Rep. Brandon Gill and Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, have vowed to vote “no” on all bills other than DHS funding until the SAVE Act is passed.

“I’ll be voting ‘no’ on all Senate bills – other than DHS funding – until the Senate passes the SAVE America Act,” Gill wrote on X on Friday.
On Sunday, President Trump also said that he will not sign any bills until the SAVE America Act is passed.
