Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) blasted Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) on Wednesday ahead of the Senate’s consideration of the SAVE Act, which passed in the House with unanimous GOP support earlier.
This comes after Thune recently reportedly dismissed the idea of a standing filibuster to override the filibuster’s 60-vote threshold. “There aren’t anywhere close to the votes” to change the rule, he said.
He further told reporters that the plan “doesn’t have a future.” He added, “Is there another way of getting there? We’ll see.”
Thune hasn’t even signed on to co-sponsor the bill, and it’s unclear whether he’d even vote to mandate documentary proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections.
Luna described Thune’s position as “very disturbing” and said he agrees with Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) that a vote shouldn’t even be held on the Senate floor.
She further slammed him for riding Trump’s coattails and ignoring Republican voters and the majority of Americans, who support voter ID requirements.
“if you’re going to depend on President Trump’s coattails to get elected to office, if you are going to say that you’re Republican, and then if you’re going to turn around and complain that I’m bullying you in the house for wanting to pass the SAVE Act, which is common sense legislation, very low hanging fruit, and the right thing to do, then maybe you should consider getting a different job,” she said.

Gaetz: Congresswoman, you have been trying to shoehorn the SAVE Act into just about every piece of legislation south of a Mother’s Day resolution, and we just got word from Senate Majority Leader John Thune that he is not going to force Democrats to stand up and do a talking filibuster. What does that say about his leadership in the Senate?
Luna: I think that it’s very disturbing that he is not listening to not just what the Republican voting base wants, but America in general. This Act, voter ID is one of the biggest bipartisan issues, I think, from banning insider trading, that we’ve seen in a while, and yet, you have both John Thune and Chuck Schumer agreeing on this issue that they don’t want to put it on the floor, which is very odd.
I think, that if you’re going to depend on President Trump’s coattails to get elected to office, if you are going to say that you’re Republican, and then if you’re going to turn around and complain that I’m bullying you in the house for wanting to pass the SAVE Act, which is common sense legislation, very low hanging fruit, and the right thing to do, then maybe you should consider getting a different job.
As The Gateway Pundit reported earlier, the US House of Representatives voted to pass the SAVE Act, sending it to the Senate for final approval.
Rep. Luna and other GOP lawmakers have called for the Senate to invoke the standing filibuster, which would only require 50 votes for passage, instead of the 60 votes needed under the “zombie filibuster.”
Even one Democrat, Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX), voted in favor of the legislation.
