A woman’s body, a woman’s choice, right?
Those of us in the pro-life movement believe an unborn child’s right to life trumps any woman’s right to choose but we also know that many women are coerced into abortion, sometimes with fatal consequences for them if they don’t comply.
Incredibly, homicide is the leading cause of death for pregnant women. Here are some of the more recent crimes against mothers and babies:
- Eighteen-year-old Kaylin Fiengo was shot in the head at a park in Sanford, Florida, in November 2022. The baby’s father, Donovan Faison, was convicted of first-degree murder and killing an unborn child. He wanted the teenager to abort because he was living with another woman, who was also pregnant. He faces the death penalty when sentenced Dec. 5
- Twenty-year-old Raquiah King was found shot dead in a roadside ditch in Hanover County, Virginia, in July 2022. Her boyfriend, Navy Lt. Emmanuel Coble, paid for an abortion but she refused to go through with it. Coble is serving two life terms for first-degree murder and death of a fetus.
- In November 2024, 33-year-old Jameisha Wilkes was shot to death at an apartment complex in Charlotte, North Carolina. Her married boyfriend, Dasean Maddox, is serving 25 years for second-degree murder and murder of an unborn child.
- Thirty-three-year-old Hailey Privett was pregnant with twins when her fiancé, Ernie Victor Solis, stabbed her to death with a kitchen knife in June of this year. He is facing life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Perhaps these murderers were unaware that, due to a policy enacted during the administration of Joe Biden, they didn’t have to murder their pregnant partners; they could have just killed their unwanted babies.
Chemical abortion for years has been the most common method of terminating a pregnancy, and hundreds of thousands of women annually choose it. But for some – for too many – the choice is forced on them without their knowledge.
Since April 2021, thanks to Democrat Joe Biden, a prescription for the deadly pills no longer requires an in-person visit to an abortion seller. This was to be a temporary change, necessitated by the Covid lockdown. But by December of that year, it became permanent. In 2023, the number of pharmacies able to prescribe the drugs ballooned to include nationwide chains like CVS and Walgreens.
But these days, you don’t even need to go to a pharmacy to pick up the lethal prescription. Anyone can order abortion pills online and have them sent by mail, even into states where laws protect babies from abortion. This invitation to kill their inconvenient offspring has proven too good to pass up for some men. Just about every week the news carries a story of a man arrested or convicted of slipping pills to a pregnant girlfriend or wife. Here are a few of the recent stories:
- In June of this year, Justin Banta, an IT worker for the Justice Department, was charged with capital murder after allegedly adding mifepristone to the chocolate chip cookies he baked for his girlfriend, who had declined his offer to pay for an abortion because she wanted the baby. Incredibly, the Texas Tribune described the charges against him as “another attempt to rein in abortion pills.” The heartbroken mother also has filed a wrongful death suit against Aid Access, a European abortion profiteer that is one of the world’s largest suppliers of abortion pills.
- Married couple Mason and Catherine Herring of Houston were separated when he tried, on seven separate occasions, to force her to drink beverages spiked with abortion pills. Their daughter lived but suffers from developmental delays. Mason Herring, an attorney, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 180 days in jail.
Then there are those men who decide to take a different route to administer the pills. David Coots, a nurse from Gig Harbor, Washington, forced abortion pills into his pregnant partner during sex on several occasions. The baby lived. Dr. Hassan-James Abbas of Toledo held a pregnant woman down by the neck and forced abortion pills into her mouth. He was able to order the pills online using the name of his estranged wide. The baby died and his medical license was suspended but no criminal charges were filed.
These are the crimes we know about, but imagine how many more of these murders go undetected.
Under Health Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr., the FDA has vowed to undertake a thorough review of the safety of mifepristone and now 175 U.S. House Republicans and 51 senators are demanding a “robust” investigation of the drug. The lawmakers want the mail-order mifepristone business to come to an end and for in-person dispensing to once again be required. That’s also one of the objectives of a federal lawsuit brought by three states – Kansas, Missouri and Idaho.
Separately, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier is suing Planned Parenthood for claiming that mifepristone is “safer than Tylenol.” Thirty-six women, whom we know of, have died of chemical abortion since the drug was approved by the FDA. But the other ways women are harmed by the drug – and how often – we might never know, since the FDA no longer reports “adverse effects” other than mothers’ deaths.
Legal abortion has given men a sense of entitlement that proves deadly for the women or unborn children in their lives on a frighteningly regular basis and the advent of chemical abortion has only made it worse. Women who willingly take the drug are frequently not prepared for the intense pain and prolonged bleeding it causes, and many of them have said they will never forget the awful moment when their babies have been expelled from the womb.
This is a bad drug and we are long overdue for a comprehensive, non-partisan evaluation of the many, many ways chemical abortion hurts women and their children.
