A 27-year-old mother named Anastaiya Colon collapsed on the dance floor of Boston’s Icon Nightclub early Sunday morning and later died at a local hospital.
Rather than stepping up to assist, a callous crowd allegedly gathered around, whipping out their phones to film the unfolding emergency, ignoring police orders to back off and give space to first responders.
In response to the shocking incident, Icon’s entertainment and liquor licenses were immediately suspended, shutting down the venue pending a full investigation.
According to a report from the Boston Police Department, officers were flagged down outside the Warrenton Street nightclub around 12:28 a.m. by one of Colon’s friends, who frantically explained that her companion was inside, on the floor, and not breathing.
Upon entering, police found Colon unresponsive in the recovery position, her face covered in vomit and mucus, eyes fixed, and without a pulse. They immediately began CPR while calling for Boston EMS.
A club cashier, who also worked as an EMT for Boston EMS, stepped in to take over chest compressions, allowing officers to focus on crowd control.
Unfortunately, that’s where the nightmare escalated.
A large group of club-goers encircled the dying woman, encroaching on the area and blatantly recording the victim’s distress on their phones.
Despite repeated demands from officers to clear space for medical personnel to work, the crowd refused to comply. Backup officers arrived, but even then, the situation was so chaotic that police had no choice but to order the entire club shut down and evacuate all patrons.
Colon, who had a pre-existing heart condition, had reportedly smoked and consumed a few drinks before the collapse, according to statements from her friends and sister.
No drug use was suspected as a factor.
She was rushed to Tufts Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
The exact cause of death has not been publicly released, but the incident is being treated as a medical emergency.
Icon Nightclub, a popular spot in Boston’s Theater District known for its vibrant nightlife, has pushed back against accusations of negligence.
In a statement given to WCVB, nightclub management claimed their staff responded swiftly: Colon’s sister alerted employees at 12:22 a.m., aid began within a minute, 911 was called by 12:24 a.m., police arrived at 12:28 a.m., and EMS reached the dance floor unobstructed by 12:35 a.m.
The club insists surveillance footage shows cooperative patrons and staff creating pathways for responders, disputing police claims of hindrance. “We hope the family finds some comfort knowing that Boston Police, Boston EMS, and the Club Staff worked diligently and efficiently,” the statement read.
But Colon’s devastated family tells a vastly different story, one of alleged indifference and delay that they believe cost her life.
Her sister, Angelica Colon, described the scene in harrowing Facebook posts: screaming for help while being ignored, the DJ briefly stopping the music only to restart it moments later, and physically fighting to protect her sister amid the chaos.
“My sister collapsed in the middle of the club. I tried to lift her myself and couldn’t. I was screaming at the top of my lungs and was ignored. The music was only stopped for two minutes, then turned right back on — as if her life didn’t matter,” Angelica wrote.
She accused staff of refusing initial aid and delaying the 911 call by over 30 minutes, vowing to pursue legal action.
On Christmas Day, family members gathered outside the shuttered nightclub for a peaceful protest, demanding justice and accountability.
“I want justice for my sister because they didn’t give her a chance to fight,” Angelica told 7 News.
She noted that Colon, a mother of two young children, was thrilled about celebrating her daughter’s first Christmas.
“I just remember her talking like ‘I want to celebrate. I can’t wait to do her first birthday, I’m gonna go big. Christmas is gonna be so lit.’”
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu called the death “a horrible tragedy” and confirmed an active police investigation.
The city’s Office of Consumer Affairs and Licensing suspended Icon’s licenses immediately after the incident, with a full hearing by the Boston Licensing Board scheduled in the coming weeks to determine the club’s future.
