A Democrat whistleblower’s allegations, supported by newly declassified FBI interview reports, are now threatening to derail the political career of Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA).
If proven accurate, the claims could expose Schiff not only to political ruin but also to significant financial penalties and the possibility of years in federal prison.
The controversy stems from Schiff’s time in the U.S. House, where he served first as ranking member and later as chairman of the House Intelligence Committee during the Trump–Russia investigation.

According to the whistleblower, who worked for Democrats on the committee for more than a decade, Schiff authorized the leaking of classified intelligence to the media to damage President Donald Trump.
The whistleblower told the FBI that during an all-staff meeting in 2017, Schiff explicitly said “the group would leak classified information which was derogatory to President of the United States Donald J. Trump” and that the material “would be used to indict President Trump.”
When the whistleblower objected, calling the plan “unethical and possibly treasonous,” others allegedly reassured him the leaks would never be traced back.
He also told federal agents that Schiff believed he had been promised the position of CIA director if Hillary Clinton won the 2016 election.
The whistleblower identified Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) as a likely channel for the leaks and claimed he was abruptly fired after alerting the FBI.
Despite repeated reports to FBI officials, including a second account to agents in St. Louis as recently as 2023, the allegations went unanswered.
Leaking classified information carries steep penalties, with fines of up to $250,000 per count.
Conspiracy and interference statutes could also apply, pushing potential prison terms to as much as 20 years if prosecutors concluded the intent was “to undermine the United States.”
Under Director Christopher Wray, the FBI has faced accusations of shielding politically connected Democrats while aggressively targeting their opponents.
Current FBI Director Kash Patel has cited the bureau’s use of informants ahead of January 6 as proof the agency under Biden often ignored misconduct when it served political goals.
Schiff has not yet publicly responded to these revelations. In the past, he has denied leaking classified material, dismissing similar accusations as partisan attacks meant to discredit him.
But with newly declassified reports backing years of whistleblower testimony, the political and legal storm surrounding Adam Schiff is far from over.
