Connecticut GOP’s Collapse: Proto’s Promotion Rewards Party Failure
Connecticut’s Republican Party continues to spiral under Chairman Ben Proto, whose leadership has seen the state GOP weakened on every front while he’s now rewarded with a national promotion to the RNC’s Budget Committee. The recent announcement of Proto as the RNC’s new Budget Chair is another sign that RINOs continue to try and pull the wool over voters’ eyes, using manufactured track records to obscure a damaging history of poor outcomes.
Financial Disarray and Budget Leadership Failure
While Proto is being handed a spot on the national Republican financial leadership, Connecticut’s GOP remains broke and increasingly ineffective at supporting campaigns or reaching voters. The party hasn’t delivered a balanced budget in years, and local candidates are left scrambling for resources even as national headlines tout Proto’s supposed expertise in “fiscal discipline”.
Losses Mounting Under Proto’s Tenure
The story for Connecticut Republicans in 2024 and 2025 has been losses: fewer seats in the General Assembly, no congressional wins, and shrinking influence at every level. Proto’s leadership has coincided with some of the worst outcomes in recent history, as Democrats continue to expand their majorities and the GOP finds itself a minor presence, incapable of mounting serious challenges.
Trump Loyalty Claims Disproved by Proto’s Actions
Ben Proto regularly touts his Trump allegiance, but in his own words has acknowledged he would not want to have dinner with the President and is not personally close to him. At the Connecticut GOP convention, he was forced to use a life-size cutout of Trump rather than secure his physical presence, a move widely mocked by voters. Proto twisted convention rules in 2025 to prevent a challenger from speaking on the floor, silencing opposition and sparking outrage among those present. Additionally, Proto co-opted a Trump-branded bus sent into Connecticut to campaign against him; Proto offered the operators money and continues to use the bus to this day for party PR, despite the original intent. Just because a bus is covered in Trump images doesn’t mean it actually supports Trump or his agenda—it’s a for-hire vehicle, and Trump supporters should use caution before spending their hard-earned money to support it.
Manipulation of Rules and Delegate Suppression: 2025 Controversy
Delegate suppression and manipulation of rules reached new heights at the Connecticut GOP convention in 2025, with Proto leveraging last-minute procedural changes to block a challenger from speaking or presenting their case to the delegates. The scene devolved into chaos, as Proto’s supporters raised their voices, aggressively confronted critics, and outside the delegate hall, tensions boiled over with reports of delegates spitting at news reporters. This episode perfectly captured the culture Proto continues to foster in his leadership.
Rewarded for Failure: RNC Promotion
Despite this litany of failures—a shrinking party, financial chaos, and resorting to manipulation of rules—Proto has now been promoted to the national Republican Budget Chair. The message to Connecticut Republicans is clear:
Loyalty to insiders outweighs actual track records and real results, and failure is rewarded with more power if you play the right political games.
Connecticut Republicans face another cycle with fewer resources, less representation, and a leadership culture rooted in exclusion instead of rising to meet electoral challenges. Proto’s national promotion is merely a distraction from the undeniable facts: under his reign, the state GOP has never been weaker.
