In a chilling case out of Marana, Arizona, 29-year-old Taton Dorfman has been convicted of second-degree murder for the fatal shooting of his 30-year-old girlfriend, Hannah Rogers, and her dog on July 28, 2024.
The incident culminated in an overnight standoff with police after Dorfman FaceTimed his ex-girlfriend while lying beside Rogers’ bloody body and confessing to the crime on camera.
According to court filings and police reports, the murder took place in the residence where Dorfman and Rogers lived. Dorfman shot Rogers once in the head, killing her instantly. He then turned the gun on her dog, firing a single shot that was also fatal.
Immediately after the killings, Dorfman FaceTimed his ex. During the video call, he lay next to Rogers’ lifeless body and bragged, “I killed her! I did it!” The convicted murderer also informed his ex that the dog was dead.
Shocked by the confession and the gruesome scene, the ex captured screenshots of the call and contacted the police.
When law enforcement from the Marana Police Department arrived at the scene, Dorfman was still inside the home. He spoke with police negotiators and confessed again, stating that he had killed Rogers and planned to take his own life.
His confession escalated the situation into a full standoff, prompting the involvement of the Pima County SWAT team.
The standoff lasted through the night, with Dorfman finally surrendering around 3:30 a.m. He emerged from the house with blood visible on his hands and face but no apparent injuries.
A handgun was later recovered from the floor at the foot of the bed where the shootings occurred.
Dorfman was initially arrested and booked on suspicion of first-degree murder and animal cruelty. However, following a trial, a jury convicted him of the lesser charge of second-degree murder earlier this week.
Dorfman now faces a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison, with sentencing scheduled for next month.
A GoFundMe fundraiser to support Rogers’ family states, “If you knew Hannah, she was a beautiful, smart and funny woman. She lit up rooms with her smile. She was caring for all life, and would always be there for anyone in need of help. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. We are still in disbelief that this has happened.”
