Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is in the news in a big way. With the new Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary, Robert Kennedy, Jr., placing great weight on science to support federal government health mandates and regulations, ADHD should be the poster child of zero science and first in need of review.
Of interest is that in the last two weeks, both the New York Times Magazine and the DailyMail.com ran lengthy articles addressing Secretary Kennedy’s efforts to review the risks associated with psychiatric medications like antidepressants, antipsychotics, benzodiazepines and methylphenidate.
In both of those articles, the Scientologists were essentially receiving kudos for being the first to question the drugging of America’s children for the alleged ADHD.
The Times article explains that twenty years ago the Church of Scientology organized nationwide protests against the psychiatric profession and Ritalin and, in a roundabout way, giving long-overdue credit to the Church for standing up for America’s children, admitting “you didn’t have to be a Scientologist to acknowledge that there were some legitimate questions about ADHD.”
That’s right, you didn’t have to be a Scientologist, but it was the Scientologists who stood up and took the lead in questioning the deadly risks associated with the diagnosis and the “treatment” of ADHD.
Then a week later, DailyMail.com ran an article about how twenty years ago actor and devout Scientologist Tom Cruise railed against Antidepressants and psychiatry during a Today Show segment with Matt Lauer.
Despite the then press skewering Cruise for his remarks, fast-forward to 2025 and Cruise is now the smartest guy in the room, accurate with his sentiments about the overprescribing of psychiatric drugs with the Daily Mail writing “Cruise’s tirade is being viewed in a new light.” You bet it is!
Cruise and the Church of Scientology knew decades ago where the then fraudulent diagnosing and drugging was headed.
Today, the Secretary of HHS can read the data and see that the warnings by Cruise and the Church of Scientology were dead on, and the nation is in the middle of a mental health crisis because of it.
That there is over-prescribing of psychiatric drugs isn’t in question.
The real question is why the federal government is funding mental health services in schools and communities when there is no science to support any abnormality that is any psychiatric disorder? And why is the federal government funding the psychiatric drug “treatments” that do not “treat” any brain abnormality?
The New York Times Magazine article provides thousands of words about the research history surrounding ADHD over many decades, but at the end of the day it admits that there still is no scientific research that identifies any abnormality in the brain that is the alleged disorder.
Still millions of children’s lives have been negatively affected because of a fraudulent ADHD diagnosis and its cocaine-like “treatment.”
And lawmakers are of no help when it comes to protecting America’s children from false diagnosing and dangerous drugs. The Biden Administration, for example, despite having no science to support any abnormality for any psychiatric disorder, threw $240 million in mental health awards to launch 400 community health centers across the country.
And this enormous increase in mental health services does not include the tens-of-billions of dollars that is picked up by the federal Medicaid program, which currently is the largest payer of mental health services in the United States…nearly $28 billion in 2022.
And perhaps the most galling federal mental health intervention is the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act which expands how schools can use Medicaid funding for mental health, including screening and services in school.
Nearly one billion dollars is being spent in America’s schools on mental health professionals and resources, including allowing nurses to organize student care.
Since when is it okay for federal taxpayers to be on the hook for mental health diagnosing that is not based in science? Since when is it okay for federal tax dollars to be spent on mind-altering drugs that do not treat any known abnormality? And, since when is it okay to subject America’s children to fraudulent mental health interventions in schools?
None of these are acceptable and every American should be begging for answers from lawmakers who have the ability to bring an end to this mental health “crisis.”
Let’s face it. Every year the number of Americans being diagnosed with a mental illness increases. Every year the number of Americans taking prescription mind-altering drugs increases.
And every year the number of Americans taking or attempting to take their lives increases. Given that there is no science to support the diagnosis, or the treatment, is there any doubt that the crisis will only get worse?
It’s time for regulatory intervention and it needs to begin by withholding federal dollars until the mental health industry can provide the science to support psychiatric diagnosing.
