Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, despite being reelected for a second term, is having a rough time lately, both legally and in terms of her own health.
To begin with, she is haunted by the ghost of Pfizergate: a court in Liege, Belgium, is set to review whether von der Leyen has legal immunity against corruption charges related to the procurement of COVID-19 vaccines.
This session is scheduled for the historic day of January 20, 2025, and the Belgium court decided that the case is to proceed as planned, denying von der Leyen’s bid to postpone it – you can read on Gateway Hispanic.
The European Commissioner is facing significant legal scrutiny regarding the mishandling of COVID-19 vaccine contracts, with the General Court of the European Union already ruling that von der Leyen’s Commission was not transparent enough about the Pfizer contracts.
There’s also legal interest in the ‘secret’ text messages exchanged between her and Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla during the negotiation of the contracts.
So, as the legal challenges mount concerning the Commissioner’s transparency, potential maladministration, and allegations of secretive negotiations, on top of that, she suddenly became ill and was hospitalized in secrecy.
The European Commission has had to scramble to deny today (13) that covered up the health issues plaguing von der Leyen after it became known that she was hospitalized with severe pneumonia.
Associated Press reported:
“Von der Leyen, 66, is the EU’s most high-profile political figure. In September, she marked the start of her second five-year term as commission president by traveling to Ukraine and then to South America for a major trade meeting.
On Jan. 3, the commission had said von der Leyen was ill with ‘severe pneumonia’ and that her appointments for the next two weeks had been canceled. It said her agenda was cleared of meetings in Lisbon and in Poland, which has just taken over the EU’s rotating presidency.”
German news agency dpa eventually reported that she had been admitted to the hospital, again raising questions about lack of transparency at the EU’s executive branch.
“Asked by reporters why news of her hospitalization had been withheld, commission spokesperson Paula Pinho said: ‘We said that the president had severe pneumonia. We said that she was dealing with severe illness’ at her home in the German city of Hannover.”

Media was informed that she had canceled her appointments in early January but was taking important phone calls.
“’We therefore gave you the critical information about the health status of the president, by saying what sickness she had, and how serious it was’, Pinho said in response to questions from several reporters, without explaining why the hospital details were withheld. ‘Her ability to act was never in question’.”
Von der Leyen reportedly spent eight days in the hospital, from June 2-10, and it’s said to be ‘recovering well’, due back in Brussels at the end of this week.
“The former German defense minister usually keeps a punishing travel schedule. She is due to attend a European Parliament session in Strasbourg, France, next week and will travel to the World Economic forum in Davos, Switzerland.”
