The three most vacuous and misleading personalities of the Biden Team are now mad at the American People for not accepting their explanations of what is going on in the National Airspace System (NAS).
When Jake Sullivan, the National Security Advisor, Alejandro Mayorkas, the Secretary of Homeland Security, and John Kirby, the Spokesman for the National Security Council get together, at best, nothing happens – or worse, nothing good happens.
There are other minions involved in this public affairs fiasco beyond these three, but these three are the poster children for U.S. Government mis, dis, and mal information.
After the debacle of the Chinese Spy Balloon in 2023 they have an enormous credibility gap and are only resurrecting this lack of trust with the current drone chaos.
The discombobulated explanations coming out of these three changes almost hourly. “Give states the power to shoot down drones”, It’s the FAA’s fault for recent flight rule changes, Nothing indicates a Public Safety Risk, and there is no Iranian involvement.
Yet from December 2023 over Virginia Beach to the United Kingdom to multiple regions and military installations in the U.S. the drone swarms continue.
Biden Team has failed to establish clear roles and missions for domestic counter-drone operations
Simply put, there is not an integrated, holistic, and pervasive Federal capability for Counter-Drone operations, and the Bident Team should just say that.
The Biden Team should explain the realities and vagaries of the NAS as well as developing trends that are leading to an even more complex NAS by several orders of magnitude.
In the modern NAS, ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast) has become the predominant situational awareness tool. This is where compliant and cooperative air vehicles are accurately and properly “squawking” their flight data to the NAS.
The key terms are “compliant”, “cooperative”, “accurately”, and “properly”. What would happen if a bad actor with super computing capacity, Artificial Intelligence, and big data analytics inserted themselves into the NAS to corrupt ADS-B?
Chaos lite like what we’re seeing or Chaos heavy with much more ominous and mortal outcomes.
The Chinese are currently conducting a cyber blitz into American Critical Infrastructure with Salt Typhoon, they might want to look into the connection with the drone chaos.
Congressman Michael McCaul came from a briefing and pointed squarely at the Chinese for the drone issues.
There are three developing trends that are taking a NAS with about 4,000 to 6,000 air vehicles in the air at a time to a far more complex environment, these are:
Advanced Air Mobility: This is the concept of using small air vehicles for personal transport and commuting within the United States
Drone Package Delivery: Everyone is eager to get Amazon deliveries to their house – using drones would make package delivery faster, more efficient, and reduce street traffic.
Domestic Counter-Drone Operations: The Biden Team has been convening a working group for several years to come up with the national, whole of government operating concept for domestic counter-drone operations.
The simple answer is that the Biden Administration has failed to finalize and actualize any of these initiatives, especially domestic counter-drone operations.
American public has lost faith and confidence in Biden Team
Jen Easterly, who works for Secretary Mayorkas leading America’s top domestic cyber agency has warned that a war breaking out in Asia would spread to the U.S. in cyberspace and have serious consequences in the real world.
The White House has revealed that China is conducting a massive cyber hack of our telecommunications network. Someone needs to tell Mayorkas, Sullivan, and Kirby that all of our data and communications for the NAS also travels along this same telecommunications network.
The inability of these three to cognitively make the connection that since the preponderance of the telecommunication networks have been hacked, that likely the entire NAS has been compromised and that this just might have a remote possibility of being connected to the drone chaos.
The Chinese spy balloon debacle of 2023 cemented in the minds of many that Kirby, Sullivan, and Mayorkas were not trustworthy.
The drone debacle only adds further evidence to the concerns over their mischievous word salads.
One of the best practices in crisis management and public communication is to put as much out, as fast as possible, and if the U.S. Government doesn’t know or is being overwhelmed, just tell the people the truth. But that is apparently not in the DNA of the Biden Team.
Three basic elements needed for the Domestic Counter Drone Concept of Operation
The White House release on the inter-agency counter drone concept of operation is a nominee for Department of Government Efficiency review.
Elon and Vivek should lock the inter-agency team in a room of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building (that classic building next to the White House, where at one time, the entire Federal Government fit in) and not let them out for 72 hours, with no food or bathroom breaks, until an actionable initial operational concept is finalized.
There are three elements the successful domestic counter drone plan must address.
Surveillance and Sensoring: The existing NAS minimizes use of active sensoring of the airspace, but instead relies on ADS-B for self-reporting. There needs to be a return to active (but non-emitting) surveillance, at least around sensitive facilities.
Advanced data analytics and AI will be needed to rapidly analyze and sort the data to immediately detect and action non-compliant/non-cooperative air vehicles.
Local and Regional Alerting: At AI speed, once a non-compliant or outlier air vehicle is identified, there needs to be both an “amber alert” capability and an old-school, Cold War style, audible alert to let citizens and first responders know that a possible drone situation has been detected.
The Cold War sirens that used to play every Wednesday at noon from the local fire station need to be re-installed and turned back on.
Engagement capability to down the drone: A domestic “Iron Dome” like capability is needed around sensitive sites on a far more pervasive scale to engage the drones.
The capability should be as “soft kill” as possible to minimize deadly shrapnel and falling debris, but at the same time first responders and citizens need to become conditioned to taking cover to protect themselves.
It is a lot to expect in the final moments of the Biden tenure, but it would be wonderful to see a glimmer of ethical, trustworthy public comments out of Mayorkas, Kirby, and Sullivan. They still have a few minutes left to exhibit these characteristics.
All viewpoints are personal and do not reflect the viewpoints of any organization.
